It arrived with ripped up pads, many having fallen completely out. I knew that I had a diamond in the rough. I sent out the horn to Tenor Madness for a complete mechanical overhaul and restoration.

This horn appears to have been relacquered sometime in the past. Also, it used to have a mic pickup on the neck which has since been patched.

Tenor Madness does the absolute best overhauls in the US, and one can really tell with this sax. It plays with an effortlessness down to low Bb which I have rarely experienced on tenors. The horn has that dark, centered sound that makes 80,xxx tenors famous for. I toyed with keeping this horn for myself, and will not be disappointed if it doesn't sell anytime soon, it is such a delight to play. Although it is the ideal jazz tenor, it's also equally at home in classical venues. In fact, it was recently played professionally in an orchestral setting at the Kennedy Center.

As with all DCSax instruments, this sax comes with a 7-day return policy. If you don't like it for any reason, you're welcome to return it, provided you pick up shipping and insurance both ways. But the way this horn plays, I don't think you'll even have to consider this.

Vintage Berg Larsen ligature and cap set. This is a world class mark VI alto that was recently overhauled by Matt Stohrer. It has the very rare vertical Mark VI stamp below the D palm key that is only found in this serial number range. The horns with the vertical Mark VI stamp are the ones David Sanborn plays and collects, and this is right smack in the middle of that range. The lacquer is original, and the sax was originally unengraved. Brian, from GetASax, had the horn engraved with the iconic Selmer engraving.

This sax is in absolutely stunning physical and playing condition, and it's nearly perfect in both regards. I've rarely seen a horn of this age in such good shape. The horn plays wonderfully. This is the most coveted serial number range for Mark VI altos, as they were the first to get fitted with a medium bow. This is a one-owner top of the line Selmer tenor that has seen very few miles. It was used sparingly for two years before being put away. The condition of this horn is fabulous. There are some very light surface scratches and some lacquer wear around the top of the bell, but otherwise it's very clean and nearly flawless. To be honest, I put more scratches on my personal unengraved Selmer tenor in the first month that I owned it than what this has. This example is particularly striking and unique, as it doesn't have any engraving. This is a factory option that one rarely sees in the United States.

The Series II tenors are the best selling model that Selmer makes in the American market. In fact, it seems like most professional saxophonists I run into tend to favor the series II over the series III.
