This sax retains approximately 85% of its original lacquer.

This is a particularly rare example. Selmer introduced the low A baritone with the SBA model. Before that, its baritones were built only to low Bb. Of the roughly 500 SBA baritones made, only about 180 were low A horns. In 1952, Selmer also began producing the low A baritone with a one-piece bell, which makes examples like this one even less common.

My repairman recently serviced the saxophone, replacing seven pads, the neck cork, and several other corks and felts. The remaining pads are older but sealing well. The neck likely does not retain its original lacquer, but it is in good condition and has never been pulled down. The sax comes in a ProTec case which fits the horn well.

This horn has a powerful core to the sound. It's compact and dark, but nimble. This is keyed to low A which was an option for the Mark VI model before that range was standardized with later models. For many players, the extra range is a must. I can play easily through the entire range down to low A. There is a dent in the upper crook but otherwise is in good physical shape overall. There's been some dentwork performed mainly on the bow, but it's honestly not bad for a bari that's nearly 50 years old.

This sax has its original lacquer. The sax was just serviced by my repairman prior to sale. About half of the pads look like they were recently replaced, so there's a mix of pads on the horn, but they all seal well and it's easy to get down to low Bb. The neck is original to the sax and has a matching serial number. The lacquer is not original, and there's quite a bit of body wear from 65+ years of playing. None of that matters when you play it. This horn has a great, assertive, even voice.

If you're shopping for a bari these days, you have two ways to go. You can get a low A horn, which gives you the pedal C. But that extra key and tubing adds weight, and you feel it. The other option is a great sounding low Bb horn like this one. These are more responsive, easier to sing on, and easier to be expressive with. They're lighter, which makes a real difference on a long rehearsal or a four hour gig. And because low Bb horns are priced well below their low A equivalents, you get a lot more horn for your money. I compared it side by side with another Selmer neck and it held its own.

Most bari players these days want the low A. A lot of big band, pit, and contemporary rep is written down to that note, and without the key you'll have to play it an octave higher than written. The extra tubing also gives you a bigger, fuller sound with more weight at the bottom, which is what you want when you're the foundation of a section.
