137,xxx Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. Wow, a nearly 100% mint condition Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone in the desirable Sanborn serial number range. This is perhaps the cleanest Mark VI I've ever seen, and it happens to be in the very best serial number range for Mark VI altos. There are some light blemishes on the neck and some tarnish on the alternate F# key. Otherwise, the lacquer condition is nearly perfect. The previous owner had Tenor Madness perform a top of the line overhaul. Since then, the sax has had little use so the pads are still in perfect/virtually unused condition.
The late 13x,xxx and 14x,xxx Mark VI altos are considered the very best alto saxophones that Selmer ever produced. Greats including David Sanborn and Kenny Garrett play and collect altos in this s/n range. Selmer experimented with various bow lengths and ultimately went to the medium bow shortly before this one was produced. The medium bow has the best combination of great intonation and excellent tone. For me, these altos have some extra power, focus and depth to their sound. This one also has the older style metal thumb hook. Selmer changed to plastic thumb hooks shortly after this sax was produced.
