179,xxx Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone. Here is a stunning looking and playing Mark VI that just received a top of the line overhaul from one of the best repair techs in the country. It arrived with its original coat of lacquer that was mostly faded, so we made the decision to completely remove all additional lacquer. What you see is a bare brass horn that has never been relacquered. It's currently a shiny gold color, which will darken over time as it ages further. My tech also removed a mic pickup in the neck and a flush plug was installed. The work is top notch and the repair is almost invisible. Additionally, the bow seam between the bow guard and near the Eb key was previously repaired but done very well. The sax comes in a brand new top of the line Bam Cabine case.
This is one of my favorite Mark VI's that has come through the shop in a long time. For one, I think Mark VI altos in the 170's range are some outstanding playing horns, and an overlooked s/n range. They possess a great combination of gorgeous resonant tone with good power and projection. They are not overly bright and aggressive like some late Mark VI's get. There's a core resonance to this sax that is unique and lovely. The sax is slightly darker than a 'typical' VI, so I think this would make a tremendous all around horn that would excel in all musical styles, even classical music. The action and feel of this horn is silky smooth, which is probably a combination of the outstanding repair work and this horns intrinsic qualities.
