Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone, Overhaul, Video
Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 220945. This sax has its original lacquer and approximately 98% remains. It was just overhauled prior to sale by Mike Livingston, who does excellent overhaul work. He used domed plastic resonators, similar to what this horn originally came with. The neck is original to the horn and has never been bent down. The bell flare is perfect. Mike removed a few tiny dings on the bow, but otherwise, the horn is nearly dent free. He also resoldered the low Eb key guard foot. The sax comes in its original case.
During the Mark VI run, Selmer experimented with bow lengths, ultimately deciding in 1966 that the medium bow provided the best combination of intonation, tone, and response. As a result, all Mark VI altos after this were equipped with this desirable medium bow. Additionally, Selmer added a sheet of metal to the inside upper bow of the later Mark VI horns at their Elkhart factory. If you peek through the low C tone hole, you can see this extra metal sheet and appreciate the thought and craftsmanship that went into this modification. By reducing the volume of air in the bow, this metal sheet improves low note response and projection. The later Mark VI altos have gained a reputation for their extra punch and projection, which can be attributed to these two features. Overall, this instrument offers tremendous value for the price.
