1966 Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 137489. The saxophone has 99%+ original lacquer and is in excellent original condition. The neck is original and has never been bent down. The bell flare is perfect. I believe a low Eb key guard foot has been resoldered, but it was done very carefully with a minimum of lacquer disruption. The sax comes in its original gray vinyl case. This is one of the cleanest Sanborn era horns you're likely to come across.
I acquired this sax from the original owner, whose parents bought it for him in high school. It was played regularly for a few years before being put away in its case for decades. The owner repadded the sax approximately 12 years ago, but it's been played little since then. As such, the pads are still in excellent condition and have a lot of life left in them. My tech just went over the sax, regulating the pads so that they seal perfectly.
This is a great playing horn that captures the essence of this vintage. Greats including David Sanborn and Kenny Garrett play and collect altos in this serial number range. Selmer experimented with various bow lengths and ultimately went to the medium bow shortly before this one was produced. The medium bow has the best combination of great intonation and excellent tone. For me, these early medium bow altos have some extra power, focus and depth to their sound.
