1967 149,xxx Selmer Mark VI Soprano Saxophone, Original Lacquer, Video Demo
1967 Selmer Mark VI soprano saxophone, s/n 149335. This sax has its original lacquer and was previously owned by a top professional player. The previous owner purchased it in 1984 while studying with legendary teacher Joe Allard. Joe personally tried this horn at the time and liked it — a meaningful endorsement from one of the most respected woodwind pedagogues of the 20th century.
The horn plays with a rich, flexible tone that can be warm and singing or bright and focused when pushed. Intonation is solid, and the evenness across registers makes it an easy horn to settle into.
Physically, it’s in excellent condition for its age. It was purchased from Emilio Lyons and features his custom key risers on low Bb and high E, which is a nice upgrade allowing these keys to be more easily reached. The lacquer shows normal wear for a vintage horn, but the overall appearance is clean and well cared for. Pads are in good condition and sealing well. It comes in a ProTec case.
Mid-’60s Mark VI sopranos are highly sought after for both their sound and craftsmanship, and it’s rare to find one in original lacquer with professional provenance — especially with a connection to Joe Allard.
