1961 gold-plated Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone, s/n 94645. Here is a rare gold-plated, American-engraved Mark VI tenor, made during one of the best eras of Mark VI tenor production. Original gold plated Mark VI tenors almost never come up for sale. Most of the gold plated Mark VIs on the market were plated years after they left Selmer.

I am confident that the gold plating on this horn is original. There are no signs of buffing anywhere. I took the sax to two different repairmen who have an excellent eye for identifying original finishes, and both agreed that the plating is likely original. The bell also has additional engraving beyond the standard American pattern, a special order option that is rarely seen, which is another reason to believe the plating is original. Unfortunately, no factory paperwork exists to confirm this.

Beyond the plating, this horn has a combination of features that is very hard to find on one saxophone. It has a five digit serial number, and it has an optional high F# key, which was a relatively rare addition at the time. The neck has a matching serial number and has never been pulled down.

This saxophone came from a professional player, and it's clear that he kept his horns in top playing condition. It was recently overhauled by the previous owner. The pads appear to be Pisoni Pros and are still in nearly new condition. My repairman just serviced the horn, ensuring that the pads seal perfectly.

The sound is warm and complex, with the openness that gold plated horns tend to have. The horn is incredibly responsive throughout all registers, and it is very colorful. You can shape the sound from dark to bright without having to work for it. Low notes speak effortlessly on this horn. They really pop out, even at soft dynamics.

The price is well above that of a lacquered Mark VI tenor from the same years. It reflects how rarely a gold plated five digit tenor with special order engraving and a high F# key comes to market.
