55,xxx Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto Saxophone, 97% Original Lacquer, Fresh Overhaul, Video
1954 Selmer SBA Super Balanced Action alto saxophone, s/n 55,xxx. This is one of the very last SBA's Selmer ever made before the introduction of the Mark VI. Selmer serial number lists show Selmer beginning the Mark VI model around 55201, so this is one of the last 80 or so Super Balanced Actions that Selmer ever made.
This one-owner saxophone was previously owned by a former saxophonist of The US Army Band "Pershing's Own", who was in the ensemble in the early 1960's. It was purchased directly from Selmer in Paris, hand selected for him.
The sax was just overhauled prior to sale by Eric Beach, who is one of the best repairmen in the business. Eric's key fitting is outstanding, so the keys feel tight and efficient, arguably better than a new saxophone coming out of the factory. Eric used Pisoni Pro pads and domed rivetless resonators, very similar to what the horn originally came with.
This is a great sounding SBA. It has a tremendous tonal core that is not overly bright. There's a ton of resonance, which stays remarkably even in all registers and dynamic ranges. It reminds me of an early VI but with more sweetness to the sound. It's a very expressive horn that is really fun to play. If you're in the market for a vintage Selmer alto, this one is highly recommended.
