Couf Superba I Alto Saxophone
H. Couf Superba I alto saxophone with rolled tone holes and high F#. Couf saxophones have an incredibly loyal following, and it's easy to see why based on how this fine saxophone plays. Keilwerth manufactured this instrument for Couf and used their unique geometry, producing a saxophone sound that is unlike just about any other. If you study the bell size and flare, you can see that it's quite a bit larger than most other saxophones, and a characteristic that I suspect contributes to its unique tone. It possesses an incredibly full, bold sound. The tone is absolutely huge. The sax reminds me a lot of a Super 20: punchy, expressive and capable of incredible dynamic contrast. One surprising feature of this horn is that it has oversized pearl touches. The extra size feels very comfortable under the fingers and may help increase accuracy.
I acquired this horn from the original owner and had my repairman perform a full repad. He used metal domed resonators which give the sound some extra projection and brilliance. The serial number is 80,xxx, although the neck serial number is about 1000 off from this. The owner didn't even realize that the neck serial number was off, so I suspect that the neck has always been with the horn. Nevertheless, it fits perfectly and seems to be a great match for the horn. The sax comes in the original case which is in good condition, despite an Air Force Band sticker and last name printed on the front (both should be easy to remove if desired).
