231,xxx Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone, Video, Just Serviced
1974 Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 231325. This is a pretty unique looking Mark VI. For one, it doesn't have engraving on the bell, which is sometimes seen on Mark VIs originally made for the European market. It has a gorgeous patina. My guess is that at some point a previous owner chemically removed the lacquer, giving it a dark, almost matte finish. Maybe the most interesting feature of this horn is the gold plated key guards and bow to body brace. These are definitely gold plated, and you can see some silver peeking through under the gold on a couple of the guards.
The sax was just serviced by my repairman prior to sale. He replaced 4 pads, 1 spring, 5 key corks and 11 felts. The sax arrived with fairly closed key heights, so he opened them back up to how the sax was originally set up. The remaining pads are in great condition overall and seal well. Playing down to low Bb is effortless.
I'm guessing the sax was relacquered at some point before the lacquer was stripped. It can be difficult to tell with certainty on a horn without engraving and with little to no lacquer left, but in the interest of not overselling it, I'll call this one a hard to verify relacquer.
