1981 Selmer Super Action 80 Tenor Saxophone, Just Serviced
1981 Selmer Super Action 80 tenor saxophone, s/n 320011. This is an early 1980's vintage Selmer that was made shortly after the Mark VI and VII horns. In fact, this is one of the very first Super Action 80 tenors, made within a few thousand serial numbers of the model's introduction. Some refer to this model as a Series I, but its official name is a Super Action 80. This horn is in great mechanical and physical condition. My repairman just serviced it, so it's playing very well from top to bottom. Mechanically, this horn feels modern, but the sound has a vintage character.
These are fabulous horns that are a bit overlooked, since relatively few were made. It's an interesting playing horn that is unlike any other Selmer model. They tend to have a more focused and compact sound than a Series II. For this reason, I think they make a great crossover horn that can perform both classical and jazz equally well. It's as easy to make this horn sing with an Otto Link as it is with a Selmer Concept mouthpiece. Few horns can do this as well as a Super Action 80.
Here's a video of another Super Action 80 tenor saxophone that came through the shop. It will give you a great idea of what this model sounds like.
