1954 55,xxx Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone, DOUBLE S NECK, Fresh Overhaul
1954 55,xxx Mark VI alto saxophone. The full serial number is 55558, which indicates that this is one of the very first Mark VI altos ever made. It has the rare "double S" logo, which if you look closely is actually an S and C, for Selmer et Cie. The neck has never been pulled down and has the matching serial number. I don't believe that the lacquer is original and I suspect that this was a factory relacquer. The engraving looks perfect and shows no signs of buffing.
The sax just received a full overhaul from my tech in October, and the horn plays tremendously. The sax still has its original screw-in metal resonators. This horn sings, and despite the non-original lacquer, I'd put it up against just about any other Mark VI out there. It has a beautiful presence, lots of tone color, and just sings when you put air into it.
