1870 Adolphe Sax tenor saxophone with serial number 35738. Here is an original Adolphe Sax tenor saxophone that recently arrived here at DC Sax. This sax is almost 150 years old and it has survived well through the years. The bell stamp and logo still looks excellent, and all characters are clearly visible. The sax plays in tune at A=440, which is not always the case with 1800's instruments.
The sax appears to have been recently restored, and it just came back from my repairman who put it back into excellent playing condition. The horn plays from top to bottom -- in this case, low B to high F. You'll notice the lack of many alternate keys -- bis Bb, alt F#, front F, side C, etc. Also, there is an extra octave key: the key on the left is used from D to G# and the key on the right is used for A and above. This takes a bit of getting used to, but the effort is worth it. Playing a sax like this shows how a saxophone felt and responded as Adolphe Sax built it. The sound is its own.
