1978 Selmer Mark VI baritone saxophone with low A, s/n 281436. Here's an original lacquer low A Mark VI bari priced thousands less than others you'll see online. Cosmetically, there's quite a bit of body wear from years of use, and that's what the price reflects. The horn itself plays well, and that's the part that matters.
My repairman just serviced the sax. He replaced one pad and a handful of corks and felts, regulated the pads so they seal well, and refitted the neck. The pads are a mix of old and new, but they all seal. The neck is not original to the horn. It fits well and plays surprisingly well. I compared it side by side with another Selmer neck and it held its own.
Most bari players these days want the low A. A lot of big band, pit, and contemporary rep is written down to that note, and without the key you'll have to play it an octave higher than written. The extra tubing also gives you a bigger, fuller sound with more weight at the bottom, which is what you want when you're the foundation of a section. If the music you play calls for low A, this is the horn to have, and getting there on an original lacquer Mark VI at this price doesn't come along often.
The sax comes in a case that is in poor condition but still functions well and will protect the horn.
