140,xxx Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone, 90% Original Lacquer, Fresh Overhaul, Sanborn S/N
1966 140,xxx Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone with approximately 90% original lacquer. This sax just received a full mechanical overhaul from Aaron Barnard, who is the best in the business. He fitted this horn with Pisoni Pro pads and plastic resonators, which is what this horn would have originally come with. He performed some dent work mainly on the bow. He also performed some minor work on restoring the neck to the proper taper/angle.
This is a great sounding Mark VI. The core of the sound is on the dark side, but it has a ton of color and intensity when pushed. The tonal range is quite colorful. This vintage is widely considered the very best, and this horn lives up to that reputation.
The 14x,xxx Mark VI altos are considered the very best alto saxophones that Selmer ever produced. Greats including David Sanborn and Kenny Garrett play and collect altos in this s/n range. Selmer experimented with various bow lengths and ultimately went to the medium bow shortly before this one was produced. The medium bow has the best combination of great intonation and excellent tone. For me, the 14x,xxx altos have some extra power, focus and depth to their sound.
