1951 48,xxx Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto Saxophone, Overhaul, Video
1951 Selmer Super Balanced Action (SBA) alto saxophone, s/n 48282. This alto just received a full mechanical overhaul by Eric Beach. Eric's work is truly top-notch, and the horn is now in top mechanical condition, with excellent key fitting and Pisoni Pro pads. Eric also stripped the older lacquer, revealing a clean bare-brass finish that shows off the engraving beautifully. The engraving itself is crisp and clear, though we're guessing the lacquer he removed was not original to the horn.
This saxophone plays exactly as a great SBA should. Resonant, colorful, and deeply expressive. There’s an immediacy to the sound that feels alive under your fingers, with a sweetness and flexibility that encourages exploration. The keywork feels compact and efficient, and response is instant from low Bb to high F.
SBA altos have been catching up to the reputation of the tenors for good reason. Selmer made nearly ten times as many Mark VI’s as Super Balanced Actions, so they don’t come up for sale nearly as often. There is a resonance and tonal complexity that can’t be matched, even from a fine Mark VI. The SBA feels small and nimble to hold and play, and as a result, it’s highly responsive to the player’s input. There’s a vocal quality and warmth that make this a true standout.
