203,xxx Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone, 99% Original Lacquer, Just Serviced, Video
Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 203009. Selmer experimented with bow lengths during the Mark VI run and eventually settled on the medium bow for having the best combination of intonation, tone and response. These later Mark VI altos have the desirable medium bow. Also present on this horn is a sheet of metal soldered to the inside upper bow that Selmer was putting on these horns in their Elkhart factory. If you peek through the low C tone hole, you can see the extra metal sheet. This piece of metal reduces the volume of air in the bow, thus helping with low note response and projection. These later Mark VI altos have a great reputation for having some extra punch and projection, and I think these two features are responsible for this. Dollar for dollar, this is a great vintage and a tremendous value for the horn you're getting.
My tech just serviced this sax prior to sale. The previous owner repadded the sax and then it mostly sat unused for a few years. As such, the pads are in great condition and have a lot of life left in them. The neck is original to the horn and has never been bent down. The bell flare is also perfect. There is some previous dent work near the neck strap ring to remove a ding. Otherwise, this is a very clean horn for its age. The sax comes in its original case. Both zippers move freely.
