1974 Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 229259. This sax has its original lacquer with approximately 95% still present. The sax was just serviced by my repairman prior to sale. He replaced a handful of pads, felts and corks, and regulated the rest. The remaining pads are a mix of older and newer pads, but seal well and don't need to be replaced. My repairman also removed a dent on the bow.
Late Mark VI altos like this one are fantastic players. Selmer modified the design of the altos over the 20 years of Mark VI production and began using a medium bow length in 1968 through the end of the model's run. The medium bow version has the best combination of great intonation and peppy response.
During the last few years of this model's production, the Selmer factory in Elkhart began to tweak the Mark VI altos coming from Paris by adding a sheet of metal to the top portion of the inner bow. It slightly decreases the internal volume, speeding up the airstream and helping with low note response. This horn has this added piece of metal from the Elkhart Selmer factory, which can be seen by peeking inside the low Eb or C tone hole.
