48,xxx Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto Saxophone, Just Serviced
1952 48,xxx Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone. SBA altos are starting to become as sought after as their tenor counterpart, and for good reason. These horns are just fun to play. They are super expressive and responsive. There's a sweetness to the sound that later Selmers can't capture. Later SBA's like this one are a great combination of having a bit more power and punchiness, like a Mark VI, but with a more expressive and vocal quality.
The previous owner of this sax had it since the early 1960's. It was relacquered once in the 1980's for cosmetic reasons, but the job was done well. There's still lots of engraving detail, and the tone holes look good. Relacquered horns can be just as good as original lacquer, but the key is doing it well so that the buffing process doesn't remove excessive metal or do any damage to the tone holes.
