1958 Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, s/n 75592. The lacquer is original and approximately 99% remains. This is a 5-digit medium bow alto from the late 1950's, the most desired vintage of Mark VI altos, period. A horn from this run with this much original finish is a rare find.
The late 1950's medium bow altos tend to play differently from the late 1960's medium bow horns. The sound on this one is dark and centered, with a lot of power behind it. It also offers a wide palette of tone colors, so it adapts to whatever you ask of it. There is real depth here, and it keeps revealing more the longer you play it.
I also have a 74,xxx Mark VI alto in stock, listed separately, and the two are remarkably similar in sound and response. Listen to the video for each one to compare them. I have a tough time deciding which one I like more. Both are extraordinary horns.
The neck is original to the sax with a matching serial number, and it has never been pulled down. There are no resolders, and the horn is very clean overall. It comes in a Selmer case with a case cover.
The previous owner had the sax overhauled just before I acquired it, so the pads are in new condition. My repairman then serviced it, and the horn plays effortlessly up and down the range.
