Selmer Super Balanced Action SBA Alto Saxophone, 96% Original Lacquer, Video
1953 Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone, s/n 54215. This is one of the very last SBA's Selmer ever made before the introduction of the Mark VI. Selmer serial number lists show Selmer beginning the Mark VI model around 55201, so this is one of the last 1000 or so Super Balanced Actions that Selmer ever made.
This one is in excellent original condition. The lacquer is original and approximately 96% remains. My tech just serviced the sax prior to sale, but it didn't need much. He replaced one pad and the neck cork. The pads are in great condition and will not need to be replaced for a long time. There is not a serial number on the neck, and I'm guessing that it's not original to the horn. It is definitely an SBA neck though. The neck fits great and really seems to pair up with this horn well.
I love how this horn plays. It takes on air extremely nicely, with incredibly even response from top to bottom. There's a distinct velvety tone reminiscent of Paul Desmond. It has a tremendous tonal core that is not overly bright. This horn reminds me of an early VI but with more sweetness to the sound.
