DC Sax Museum
I have bought and sold about 1,700 saxophones since DC Sax started. Most were professional horns that went to working players. A few dozen were something else: horns from Adolphe Sax's own workshop in the 1850s and 1860s, the short run of Selmer Jimmy Dorsey models, Mark VI tenors that were never played, low A altos, Varitone rigs with the amplifier still working, and factory finishes Selmer offered for only a year or two.
This page collects the ones I think are worth a second look. Most have sold. The few that are for sale now are marked. Each card links to the original listing with the full photo set and my notes from when it was in the shop.
1855 Adolphe Sax baritone Made ten years after the saxophone was patented. Early large-bell version. Restored by the tech who repairs instruments for the Smithsonian. 
1857 Adolphe Sax soprano Serial 15,xxx. Came with its original Adolphe Sax mouthpiece and played in tune at A=440. 
1861 Adolphe Sax alto Serial 23323. Early version with a larger bell than later horns. 
1867 Adolphe Sax alto Serial 30,xxx. Fully restored and performance ready as a period instrument. 
1870 Adolphe Sax tenor Serial 35738. Keyed low B to high F with no bis Bb, side C or front F. Played in tune at A=440. 
1910 Adolphe-Edouard Sax tenor Made by Adolphe Sax's son on Rue Myrha in Paris. Original nickel plating almost all intact. 
1920s King Saxello Satin silver with a gold wash bell. Near mint at about 90 years old. 
1925 Conn New Wonder II sopranino Serial 161805, in Eb. Original silver plating nearly 100% intact, with the original Conn Eagle mouthpiece. 
1927 Holton Revelation bass Serial 28828. Made by Holton, not Conn. Keyed low Bb to high F, low pitch. 
1929 King Voll-True De Luxe alto Serial 123170. Heavy gold plate, pearl key touches, engraving that runs under the neck cork to the tip. 
1932 Selmer Super Sax tenor Serial 16,xxx. 99% original silver plating with a gold wash bell. 
For sale now 1930s Leblanc SRB alto, serial 4 One of the first SRB altos made. Leblanc built about 200 in total. Near mint. 
1937 Selmer Jimmy Dorsey Series I alto Serial 24134. Balanced Action body tube with a Radio Improved bell and bow. Bell keys on the opposite side. 
For sale now 1938 Selmer Jimmy Dorsey Series II alto Serial 27424, three numbers from Jimmy Dorsey's own horn, 27447. Selmer made fewer than 100 of this design. 
For sale now 1939 Selmer Jimmy Dorsey alto Serial 28588 with 98% original lacquer. The best preserved Dorsey alto I have handled. 
1940 Conn 30M Connqueror tenor Serial 291226. Special-order artist model. About one 30M was made for every hundred 10Ms. 
1948 King Super 20 alto, gold plated Serial 297,xxx, made within months of Charlie Parker's Super 20. Full pearls. Artist model with the owner's name engraved on the bell brace. 
1951 Selmer Super Balanced Action alto, silver Serial 45,xxx with 99.9% original silver plating. Paul Desmond's SBA was a 1951 in the 43,xxx range. 
1953 Selmer Super Balanced Action baritone, low A Serial 54746. Of about 500 SBA baritones, roughly 180 were built to low A. One-piece bell. 
1955 Selmer Mark VI tenor, unused Serial 62912. Single owner, original pads and metal resonators, original wooden end plug. Stored in a dry California climate. 
1955 Selmer Mark VI tenor, unused Serial 63124. The original factory tissue paper was still in the case. The cleanest Mark VI tenor I have seen. 
1960 Selmer Mark VI tenor, Brecker serial Serial 86308, 43 numbers from Michael Brecker's tenor. Original pads, 99% original lacquer, one owner. 
1960 Selmer Mark VI baritone, low A, silver Serial 85449. A five-digit low A baritone in original silver plate. 
For sale now 1961 Selmer Mark VI tenor, gold plated Serial 94645. Factory gold plate, American engraving and a high F# key. 
1964 Selmer Mark VI alto, low A Selmer made fewer than 1,000 low A altos. This one also has a high F# key. 
1966 Selmer Mark VI Varitone alto Serial 140,xxx, the range David Sanborn plays. Selmer reportedly picked its best horns off the line for Varitone conversion. 
1967 Selmer Mark VI alto with working Varitone Serial 168,xxx with 99% original lacquer. Amplifier, cable and pickup all original and still working, from the son of the first owner. 
1966 King Super 20 Silver Sonic tenor Serial 423,xxx, Cleveland. Sterling silver bell and neck. Bought new for a high school freshman who quit a month later. 
1968 Selmer Mark VI alto, gold plated Serial 161,xxx. Never relacquered. Gold plated with silver accents and extra key engraving by Anderson Plating in the 1980s. 
Selmer Super Action 80 Series II tenor, white Factory white lacquer, offered for a short time. Engraved after the white finish was applied. 
Selmer Series III tenor, white Special-order pearl white finish with white pinky rollers. Gold engraving under the lacquer. 
1994 Keilwerth SX90R straight alto Serial 101794. Rolled tone holes, adjustable palm keys, high F#. Near mint. 
1989 Selmer Mark VI sopranino Serial 423150, one of the last Mark VI horns made. Selmer never redesigned the sopranino. Keyed to high F#.
